Using Telnet Using Java
If you have not read our page on What Is A Mud, then we recomend you go there first.
MUDs do not (as a general rule) have a world wide web interface. Tharsis Gate will have one in the future but does not now. Instead of using HTTP to connect to a mud you use TELNET.
TELNET is a method of communication taht allows you to connect full time to the MUD, to send and receive messages (almost) instantaeously and for the game to continue running without you having to press the POST button all the time.
Almost all computers come with a traditional program for Telnetting. It is called "telnet.exe" on most MS Windows computers, and may already be configured in your browser. Traditional telnet is not very user friendly for playing a MUD, but it is a quick and easy way to start. You can Log on to Tharsis Gate using Telnet by just clicking on the previous link. If it doesn't work, it is because your web browser is not configured for Telnet. You may still be able to use Telnet by typing the following command into the "Run" window (Click the start menu then select Run):
telnet tharsis-gate.org 8765
An alternative to telnet is to use a Java applet to allow you to log on. This has the advantage that the applet is specially written for MUDding, and is thus much more user friendly (It supports COLOR!). So you should consider Logging on to Tharsis Gate using Java.
If you are a steady mudder then you probably don't like the time it takes to fire up Java, and you certainly won't like traditional Telnet. Because Muds are not new to the world there are many programs that have been written just for Mudding. These provide a wide range of features for the serious mudder. Check out our page on Mud Clients for more information.
